About Badrinath

Cradling comfortably in the Nar and the Narayan mountain ranges in the backdrop of the giant Neelkanth peak (6560m), Badrinath is one of the pious locations of all Hindu shrines. It is one of the holiest places with magnificent and enchanting views of the snow-capped Himalayas. Based at the banks of cascading River Alakananda, Badrinath is a small town and serves as a nagar panchayat in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state. One of the principal attractions of the town is the famous Badrinath Temple established by the sage and philosopher Adi Sankaracharya. Kedarnath, Yamunotri, Gangotri and Badrinath form the famous Chota Chardham which is considered as the collection of most religious places in Hindu religion.

The name Badrinath has huge significance to the area. Badri means berry which is a fruit found profusely in this area. Nath means Lord. In Sanskrit, Badri is the name for the Indian Jujube tree which is an edible berry fruit.

Badrinath gets its due honor as a major pilgrimage site because of Adi Shankara in the early period of ninth century. The temple till today has retained its magnetism which pulls in millions of devotees from across the country and even the world to this location. In the earlier days people used to walk to the temple raising the steep slopes but nowadays there are several arrangements for a better yatra to the divine temple. The number of pilgrims has also increased down the years with estimated figures of 6,00,000 pilgrims in 2006 in comparison to approx 90,000 of 1961. The Vaishnavites also consider this location as a pious destination. Apart from religious point of view, Badrinath is also a popular spot for adventure lovers who love to trek the gigantic mountains like Neelkanth.

Badrinath Temple

Indeed Badrinath temple is one of the major attractions of the town. It is been stated that the temple has brilliant architecture which is truly charismatic. According to the historical background, Rishi Adi Sankara only found a black Saligram stone on the banks of River Alaknanda. The idol resembled Lord Badrinarayan. He initially made a small enshrine for the idol inside a cave near Tapt Kund. It was the king of Garhwal who discovered the idol and made the present temple in the late sixteenth century. The height of the temple is as huge as 50 feet, and there is a small cupola made on the top with the roof made of golden gilt. The structure and architecture has huge resemblance to the Buddhist Vihara temple, a typical style followed by many Buddhist shrines. The interior is designed by intricate carvings.

Mythological Significance of Badrinath

Badrinath has been a famous place for years and its mythological importance is felt when mentioned in various Hindu scriptures and even Puranas as Baadari or even as Baadarikashram. It is believed to be the abode of Lord Vishnu, specially its avatar in dual form named as Nara-Narayana.

It is also believed that the waters of River Alaknanda are pure and divine. According to Hindu clan, Goddess Ganga couldn’t witness the pain and suffering for humanity and decided to descend on earth; the force and impact of her was so much that it was difficult for the earth to withstand it, the reason why Goddess Ganga divided its course into two and the other was named Goddess Alaknanda.

Apart from this the pious land of Badrinath has received mention in the popular Hindu mythology Mahabharat where Pandavas on their journey to Heaven crossed the land of Badrinath as well as the town of Mana which falls at a distance of 4km from Badrinath in its northern side. According to the scriptures of Padma Purana the land of Badrinath is extremely pious and it has spiritual treasures.

Geography of Badrinath

Badrinath is an integral part of Chamoli district which came into existence in 1960 as an individual revenue district. Not only the district is a popular tourist location for the Badrinath temple it also had some of the best tourist locations in the nearby areas. The district has Pithoragarh in South West, Uttarkashi in North West, Rudraprayag in South-West, Almora in South East and Tehri Garhwal in the West. The exact location of Badrinath town is in the Garhwal hills at an elevation of 3133 meters and it stretches for a total length of 3sqkms. The meridians are 30°42'0"N and 79°29'0"E. It is based at a distance of 301kms from Rishikesh.

Natural Disaster in Badrinath

A devastating calamity hit the Uttarakhand state on June 2013. It was a multi-layer cloud burst which resulted into massive floods and landslides which became one of the worst situations in the history of the country after the Tsunami hit in 2004. This disaster led to a huge loss of live and a massive damage to the existing property in the areas affected. The main pilgrimage centers under Char Dham, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Badrinath all were affected hugely with vast number of devotees stranded in all the pious areas.

Among all places Badrinath is the most affected area. Flood ruined the areas in and around the temple and even stranded the roads leading to the shrine. The houses were evacuated by the National Disaster Management Authority and the town, just after the calamity, turned into a ghost town. People suffered huge losses in terms of asset and the pilgrimage center was closed till repairing works were done. However, the pious shrine was opened in 2014 during the month of May and devotees were allowed to visit again. Usual temple works and pujas have been initiated almost after an year.

As per the census of 2001, Badrinath town had a population of 841 people with 45% female inhabitants and 55% male and around 9% children which falls under the age group of 0 to 6 years. The population of this town supports education and around 89% of the total populations were found literate with 92% male and 86% females.

The summer season is quite pleasant in Badrinath with moderate climate. Visitors can enjoy the area and feel comfortable to roam around in bright sunny days. The average temperature from March to June stays around 180C making it an ideal time for sightseeing. The monsoon season is not at all suitable for travelers since there is a danger of landslides and it becomes difficult to roam around. Many roads are closed and travelers have to spend more time indoors. However, temperature remains, during this time, around 150C but scanty rainfalls remains throughout whole day and stretches for a number of days. July to September is the monsoon season in Badrinath. The winter season is characterized with chilly cold, freezing wind waves and even sometimes snow fall. The temperature may vary from 00C to 50C. However, the temple remains closed during this time.

Administration of Badrinath is looked after by the Nagar Panchyat office under Chamoli district. It is the duty of the office to look after the overall facilities and requirement of the area. Sanitation, waste management, water supply, drainage, street lights, road repair all falls under the jurisdiction of this department.

Economy of Badrinath

Badrinath is a part of Chamoli district which has been declared by the Ministry of Panchyat Raj in 2006 as one of the most backward districts of the country. In Uttrakhand, there are three such backward districts of which Chamoli is one and it receives fund from Backward Regions Grant Fund Program.
As for Badrinath, the main mode of economy here is tourism industry. Many people have their business activities centered on the tourism industries or the functions of the temple. Apart from this agriculture is the business which supports economy of the area. The major crops yielded in this region include rice, potato, pulses, wheat, maize, barley, etc. However, there are much constraints too in the agricultural activity of which versatile climatic condition is a major restraint. However, for any serious emergency one can visit any one of the two district hospitals, one is Gopeshwar and the other is Chamoli. All major medical treatments are available at these locations.

Shopping in Badrinath

Shopping can always be an entertaining activity at any place. In Badrinath, however, the options shopping is quite limited. Inhabitants here, sometimes, don’t get their necessary items too. But the best things available here which can be carried as a token of visit are the exclusive trinkets and the styled small souvenirs. It is a fact that the town sells a lot of variety in these souvenirs but the most popular ones are the “Salgram Silas” which is believed to be the sacred stone of God Vishnu. These souvenirs by far are most admired and pocketed by all tourists.

Badrinath is one of the famous pilgrimage centers of the country. The main attraction of this town is the Badrinath Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Apart from exploring the brilliance of the temple, one can also travel around and enjoy the sight of beautiful Alaknanda which is again one of the holiest rivers according to Hindu scriptures. Transport Facilities in Badrinath

Transport services of Badrinath have been made quite better in the recent years. One can travel to Badrinath with all major modes of transport.

Jolly Grant Airport, in Dehradun, is the nearest airport to Badrinath which is based at a distance of 314 kms. There are excellent road connectivity and rental taxis available to travel the road to airport at reasonable rates. Jolly Grant Airport again is one of the well connected airports of the country having flights to many major states and cities of the country. It has frequent flights to Delhi airport from where international destinations can also be connected.

One can also travel to Badrinath through railways. The nearest railway station to Badrinath is Rishikesh station under the Moradabad division. The railway station is based at a distance of 295 kms from Badrinath and can be reached through rental taxis travelling on excellent roads of NH58. Rishikesh station is well connected to many prominent stations of the country like Delhi, Haridwar, Jammu Tawi, etc. However, there are other railway stations too from where one can avail direct buses or private taxis to Badrinath. Some of these railway stations are Joshimath, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Srinagar, etc.

The best way to travel to Badrinath is through the excellent roadways. Major destinations of state Uttarakhand are connected to Badrinath through these excellent roads. Apart from UTC buses or Uttarakhand State Transportation buses which have special tour packages to Badrinath there are GMOU buses or the Garhwal Motor Owners Union Ltd buses which have buses to Badrinath for the locals and the tourists. They also have tour packages to Badrinath along with Kedarnath, Rishikesh, Haridwar etc.

Car Travel is also quite comfortable to Badrinath. There are several car rental agencies which have services to Badrinath along with nearby areas. Most of the companies have package tours which can be booked for multiple places. The rates are quite reasonable, however, there are plenty of car rental companies and one can take quotes from two or more and then finalize a good deal. It is also much important to check thoroughly the integrity and reputation of the rental agency for a professional and safe service.

Apart from all these above modes of travel to Badrinath, there is one more way to visit the excellent location and that is through helicopter services available from two locations Delhi and Dehradun. There are some reputed aviation companies who initiate the tours. The first route is Dehradun-Badrinath-Dehradun where the package is for same day tour and it includes 4 people at a cost of 2.25 lacs. There would be 20,000 rupees extra if a night halt is included in it. And the second route is Delhi-Badrinath-Delhi, where also the package is of same day tour for 4 persons with a charge of Rs 4 lacs. In this case also night halt charges will be same. There are exclusive websites which do online booking for such helicopter packages. The advantage of this kind of travel is that one can get an eagle eye view of the exotic and enchanting Himalayas and save lot of time and energy along with visiting the pious shrine.
